Clock Styles and Uses
The clock, in its centuries of use, has become an indispensable part of the way we view and record time. The types of clocks have increased as the need for clocks in offices and homes has become increasingly necessary. There are many variations on the function and style of the clock, resulting in chiming, wall, anniversary, chiming and alarm clocks. The function of the clock is important in the purchase of a clock, but the clock’s style is just as important.
There are also different types of clocks within every category. The mantel clock is a traditional item that for hundreds of years has been displayed above the fireplace. But there are plenty of other places that display the mantle clocks, including a desk of a bookcase. The Seth Thomas mantle clock began in the early 19th century, and the company continues to make mantle clocks with modern components and style. Mantle clocks made by Seth Thomas started out with wooden components, which were later replaced by brass ones. The keywound and quartz mantle clock varieties are marginally different in construction. The batteries of the quartz mantel clock means that it never has to be wound. Some quartz models of the mantel clock are also chiming clocks. Winding a keywound clock must be done about once a week.
Chiming clocks are known for their melodious quarter hour chiming. Floor clocks often use Westminster chimes, but there are other chimes that are used regularly. The Whittington chime is well known in chiming clocks, as is the St. Michael’s. The clock called an anniversary clock is so called because it needs no winding for a year. Anniversary clocks are often given on weddings, anniversaries or birthdays, and the recipient should remember that the clock will needing to be wound the next year on the same date. Some anniversary clocks have a chiming mechanism, and many look like a mantle clock.
Wall clocks hang in at least one room in most houses. At one time, the majority of clocks, including grandfather clocks, were the type that hung on the wall. Wall clocks are now diverse in design and style. Analog, chiming and digital wall clocks are all made by Seth Thomas- the oldest clock maker in America. Seth Thomas is also a manufacturer of alarm clocks. People use alarm clocks to wake up at the time they have set. The alarm on an alarm clock can also be music instead of a classic alarm sound. Digital and mechanical alarm clocks are both popular ways to wake up in the morning, as are alarm clock radios. An alarm clock also features a button, knob or handle that can be used to turn off the clock after the alarm has sounded.
